History of the Project
Fairhaven was a 253-bed
Long-Term Care facility jointly owned by the City of Peterborough
and the County of Peterborough. It was designated as a Category
"D" facility requiring a mandatory rebuild. The former building
occupied the north end of a site consisting of approximately 17
acres and the new, completely independent 256-bed Long-Term Care
facility was built on vacant land to the south of the existing buildings,
while continuing to operate the existing facility.
Upon completion and commissioning
of the new LTC facility, and after approval from the Ministry of
Health and Long-Term Care, the residents were relocated to the new
facility. The "Big Move"occured on a cold January
day in 2003. With careful planning and co-ordiantion, every Fairhaven
resident moved to the new facility on the same day.
When it became apparent
that the old builing could not be successfully renovated, it was
demolishedstarting in January 2005. The property at 131 Langton
Street has been offered to developers with the hope that affordable
senior's housing could be located on this scenic location.
